Jesus, satan, and what love does

This is an ongoing series about the book Love Does by Bob Goff. I am exploring each chapter and sharing a few of my thoughts.

Chapter 18 – Catching a Ride

Just a quick quote from Bob Goff in his book Love Does and some of my thoughts on this beautiful Friday.

When I think about satan, my thoughts go to how Jesus interacted with him in the desert. Jesus spoke with him for just a few seconds and then sent him away. Satan was a manipulator who wanted to control God, but Jesus had a relationship with God that satan didn’t understand, and Jesus had no problem telling him off and getting rid of him. I think we should do the same.

I love that Bob totally gave the middle finger of grammar to satan by not capitalizing his name. (“Middle finger of grammar” is a glorious phrase Jon Acuff coined)

Read the quote again.

Jesus doesn’t invite satan and his lies in to visit. He sends satan away. Jesus doesn’t entertain satan at his home and wonder when it’s all going to become too much and then give in to temptation. Jesus actively sends satan away.

I wonder:

What if we quit entertaining the lies, the fears, the doubts, the guilt-laden manipulative tactics from the people we know and don’t know?

What if we instead didn’t invite the satan to sit down and have a cup of tea with us? Deciding if we should or shouldn’t give in to what satan is offering?

What if we simply sent satan away?

Jesus sent satan away – that’s what love does.

Reverse economy is the way to go

This is an ongoing series about the book Love Does by Bob Goff. I am exploring each chapter and sharing a few of my thoughts.

Chapter 17 – Corner Store Economics

“I used to think rules were made by someone else, but now I know we get to make some of our own.”

Reverse economy. And a story of shopkeeper and his influence on Bob.

Bob talks about how Jesus was always speaking about reverse economy. To receive, give. To lead, follow. Poor is rich. Die to live.

“…we have more power than we think to make our own rules about life to live out the economy that Jesus put in place.”

It’s a switch, isn’t it? We live differently. We choose differently. We treat others differently. In a reverse economy, we get to live out loud how Jesus lives.

I usually don’t like the idea of reverse economy. And I’ve been know to get stubborn about the idea. Because I know people who have suffered, so: Why do bad things happen to good people? Why did they have to shut down their business? Why did he get disowned? But then I think of all the messy, glorious beauty that has come from their unknown depths of heartache and I begin to see it. I see reverse economy in action. And I can help speak truth into those circumstances. I can be a bearer of love, of loyalty. I can be steadfast as my God is. And I’m growing to embrace reverse economy. I’d rather be with Jesus on this one.

Sent with Writer.

Missing the mark

This is an ongoing series about the book Love Does by Bob Goff. I am exploring each chapter and sharing a few of my thoughts.

Chapter 16 – Hunting Grizzlies

“I used to think I had missed the mark and God was mad about it, but now I know “missing the mark” is a stupid analogy.”

What a chapter! This would be the chapter I will tell my brother-in-laws all about. They like hunting and guns and stuff. It’s about hunting grizzlies in the house and a mistake that ends with Bob as a boy soaked in his own blood and a shiner to beat all shiners. Continue reading

Grateful to have a mentor who has been in my ear for years about how I need to get to writing and I am finally doing it.
Grateful for friends who don’t worry I’ve wandered too far – they know “not all who wander are lost” (Tolkien) Continue reading

What Jesus Did

This is an ongoing series about the book Love Does by Bob Goff. I am exploring each chapter and sharing a few of my thoughts.

Chapter 15 – A Word Not To Use

Bob packs a punch in this chapter, but in his usual easy-going lighthearted way. For me the part I focused in on was all about what Jesus did. In my search to find Jesus, to embrace God, to love unreservedly, to leave my judgements in the dirt – I found this chapter refreshing. Continue reading

Bigger and Better

This is an ongoing series about the book Love Does by Bob Goff. I am exploring each chapter and sharing a few of my thoughts.

Chapter 13 – Bigger and Better

Bigger and Better is a game in which participants begin with an item of little value and go around in a neighborhood and try to trade up that is bigger and better than the original item. I don’t think I’ve played this game before, but it sounds like it would be fun. Continue reading
